Jonas Valanciunas lifted the champion’s trophy as the packed Siemens Arena celebrated Lithuania winning gold medals in the U18 European Championship at home in Vilnius. The home team dominated against Russia throughout the whole final to finish on top 90-61 (28-9, 18-22, 17-12, 27-18).

This same generation of players won the U16 European Championship two years ago. Just like the previous time, team Lithuania went all the way to the top of the podium without slipping up.

On an average, the Lithuanian national side defeated their opponents by a 21-point difference. The final itself was just as easy right from the first quarter.

Cheered on by a massive army of vocal supporters, the Lithuanians started the game with a high intensity and went into the lead early on scoring the first eight points of the game and had further increased the lead to 17 points as the opening period was closing to a halt.

The home team started the second quarter just as strong as they finished the first one and the Lithuanian lead became overwhelming after Jonas Valanciunas’ points to make it 36-12. However, Russia didn’t look to be surrendering just yet and went on a 12-2 run to claw their way back to a reachable distance – 11 points (27-38).

The second half didn’t bring any surprises as the home team played solid basketball and kept the distance playing very good defense. Fulfilling the expectations of many, the pre-tournament favorites went on the whole way and became the new European Champions.

Jonas Valanciunas had another amazing night – the Lithuanian captain scored 31 points on 12-of-15 field goal shooting and added a staggering 18 rebounds.

Deividas Pukis provided the support from long-range once again with 5-of-10 three-pointers for a total of 21 points. Renaldas Simanavicius scored 12 points and Dovydas Redikas finished the game with 8.
