Mantas Kalnietis had a good game but it wasn't enough to stop Spain

The two-week old story repeated itself as Lithuania lost to Spain by a huge margin again. The Baltic side lost 75-94 (19-24, 22-25, 13-25, 21-20) against the hosting Spanish side in Madrid despite a wonderfully-played first half.

Lithuania didn’t look like it’s usual self in the beginning on the game – all in a good sense, as the Spaniards seemed surprised with the pace of the game Lithuania had to offer. The Spanish team’s coach Sergio Scariolo had to quickly call for a time-out after the Lithuanian fast-break game gave the guests a 31-26 leads over the pre-game favorites.

However, the hosts decided that playing with fire could result in even worse things and switched on their aim from outside – Juan Carlos Navarro bagged in two triples as Jorge Garbajosa added one of his own to swing the balance Spain’s way at 49-41.

Lithuania played just as poorly in the beginning of the second half as they played well in the first one allowing Spain to start the third quarter with an 11-1 run to lose them out of sight as the gap between the teams reached 60-42.

This was already the second Lithuanian loss to Spain in two weeks with Spain winning the first game just as comfortably 97-76. It was the two games against the Spaniards that Lithuania failed to collect at least 80 points in the whole friendly game marathon.

Kestutis Kemzura (head coach of Lithuania): “Comparing with the first game, we were more concentrated and played the first two quarter fairly well. Got stuck in the third. We’re going to analyze why this happened, but I already saw that after making only six turnovers in the first half, we had 13 in the second one. Spain played more acrively and we lost our guard. A team like Spain is going to punish you for this every time. We have to decide who’s going to get the last chance to prove themselves tomorrow. The game against USA is not going to be easier.”
