Kleiza was the hero in the first half, the villain in the second

Lithuania’s third-quarter syndrome let us know about itself as the Baltic side fell into a slump right after halftime and lost the previously held initiative to lose 77-61 (15-7, 14-21, 20-29, 12-20) in the end against the United States in Madrid on Saturday evening.

The greens started the game very well playing attractive and enjoyable basketball to take a surprise 11-3 lead after Jonas Maciulis slammed one home over Lamar Odom and Renaldas Seibutis went coast-to-coast after a steal.

The first quarter was probably one of the worst in the team USA history as the pre-game favorites managed to collect only seven points in the opening period. The whole game didn’t kick off until after the halftime when USA started to use full-court pressure, which the Lithuanian guards couldn’t cope with.

One turnover after another allowed USA to gain confidence converting one fast-break after another. The game flipped on its head after Mantas Kalnietis was called for an unsportsmanlike foul and Linas Kleiza got an additional technical one.

Team USA converted all four free-throws also finishing the extra possession with a basket as well to open up an eight point gap.

It was all one-way traffic from then on, as the Americans never looked back and continued pressuring the ball throughout the whole court – Arvydas Eitutavicius lost the ball a couple of times and a few untimely passes were stolen as well. The American lead reached twenty before being cut down to 16 at the final whistle.

Kestutis Kemzura (head coach of Lithuania): “Our main goal wasn’t winning. We tried to win but only alongside other issues we had at hand. The players showed the character and stuck to the plan which we had prepared before the game – we fought.

It’s hard to keep the intensity with a small rotation and we wanted to get most of our guys involved. We lacked sharpness, made a lot of mistakes and in result committed a lot of turnovers.

We have to be more aware and improve the understanding between each other. Team USA punished us for this without hesitating. Our biggest problem is rebounding. We can eliminate this by concentration.”
