Lithuania welcomes back the heroes

14 Sep 2010, 10:55 PM

Lithuanians gathered in tens of thousands to welcome their heroes who returned from the World Championship in Turkey with bronze medals.

  • You can check out how Lithuanian players were welcomed in Vilnius in our photo gallery.
  • Photos from the official part of the welcoming are in another photo gallery.

Team Lithuania retuned back home via a charter flight and landed in Vilnius just before ten o’clock. After being met and congratulated by the country’s top government officials the team were driven to the city’s town hall in an open-top bus.

High fives were flying all around as the players and coaches were called up to the stage one by one. The players were extremely pleased with such an amazing welcoming – some could hardly hold the tears while others had just had huge smiles on their faces.

The first ever such achievement in the World Championship was evaluated by being presented with national awards.

Ho yes Simas you are right, I forgot Valanciunas, a very impressive young player, also very motivated to play for Lithuania. For Motiejunas, I am more skeptical...it is maybe because I have not seen him playing so often this year but I think that Valanciunas is better than Motiejunas in every aspect.

BalatotoAfter this tournament, I think that guys like Jasikevicius, Kaukenas, Siskauskas and Ilgauskas of course definitely belong to the past of Lithuanian team. The team for next year will be almost unchanged, except the expected come back of Lavrinovic brothers or Petravicius.

I'd rather see Motiejūnas and Valančūnas in place of the two Lavrinovic brothers or, if looking at this year's squad, Andriuškevičius and Klimavičius.

Farrel from AmericaI just wanted to say that Lithuanian basketball (both the on-court play and devoted fans) embodies the best the sport has to offer. The joy, enthusiasm and quality you bring to every contest is a delight to watch. I will watch EuroBasket 2011 and be pulling for my new co-favorite team - Team Lithuania :)

Happy to hear so! I think you're not the only new Lietuva supporter after this WC - the guys played some amazing basketball!
