The Euroleague campaign is over for Lietuvos Rytas as the team from Vilnius didn’t use the historic chance to reach the quarterfinals in the first time in the club’s history. The defending Lithuanian champions couldn’t handle the visiting Caja Laboral and ended up losing 68-77 (16-27, 23-13, 16-18, 13-19) despite managing to claw back into the game after letting the Spanish team gain a solid lead a couple of times.

“Before I say anything about this game, I’d just like to remind you how much problems and question marks there were about this team. We finished our Euroleague season today, but I’m proud on the way we played and the way we put the mark on this Euroleague campaign. Maybe, this is the maximum of this team at this moment and nobody should lose the sense of reality. We almost made an impossible thing, but we simply lost to a better team tonight, although we had our chances,” Lietuvos Rytas coach Aleksandr Trifunovic said in a very meaningful comment after the game.

Kenan Bajramovic led the hosts in scoring with 14 points, but made only 1-of-7 shots from beyond the arc along the way while Milko Bjelica was the only other Lietuvos Rytas player in double-digits with 11 points. Martynas Gecevicius and Darryl Strawberry scored 9 points each, as Jonas Valanciunas also finished with 9 as well as adding an additional 11 rebounds.

“Lietuvos Rytas is a good team, which passes the ball very well. However, we played good defense. Especially against Khalid El-Amin, who is a very good player and can sometimes decide the outcome of the game on his own. Vilnius has a very good team, but we deserved to win today,” said the visitor’s coach Dusko Ivanovic.

Caja Laboral’s swingman Fernando San Emeterio was a real mystery for Lietuvos Rytas’ defense collecting 19 points and 11 rebounds for a total ranking of 34. David Logan helped his teammate carry the scoring load and finished the game with 15, Stanko Barac dropped in 13 points while Mirza Teletovic and Marcelinho Huertas added 12 and 11 points respectively.

That is true, Lietuvos Rytas showed up with a great game in front of their home crowd but Caja Laboral was determined to make it to the quarterfinals, so they cannot be stopped. It would have been historic but apparently, it's still not L. Rytas' time to shine. Nothing to be ashamed of, though!!
