Four strongest teams from NKL, the second Lithuanian division, fought for the medals in the league’s Final Four held in Garliava at the weekend. After losing only once in the whole 46 game season, Pieno Zvaigzdes came out victorious after defeating Mazeikiai 77-68 (21-14, 18-17, 12-22, 26-15) in the final to claim the team’s first ever trophy.

Despite taking the NKL crown, the team from Pasvalys is not guaranteed a place in the Lithuanian top flight for next season, as Pieno Zvaigzdes will have to play a promotion-relegation series against the worst Lithuanian League (LKL) side Naglis, which is involved in a recent betting scandal.

Darrick Leonard received double the silverware after being named the Most Valuable Player for the victors, having collected nice numbers across the board – 20 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Zambalist Fredrick scored 14 for Pieno Zvaigzdes, while Darius Griskenas and Gintautas Vileita added 13 and 10 points respectively.

The MVP award of the losing side went to the American forward Jason Warren, who not only scored 25 points, but also grabbed 13 boards, as Dainius Vaitelis and Marijus Norkus collected 10 points each for Mazeikiai.
