Jonas Valanciunas could go as high as

Two Lithuanians will be looking forward to hearing their name read out by David Stern in the 2011 NBA Draft. Following Donatas Motiejunas’ decision to declare for the draft, it comes with no surprise that Jonas Valanciunas has done the same.

With the looming lockout, the chances to get drafted high will be as good as ever, as many American players, in what looks like a weak draft in general, decided not to declare for this year.

It is rather likely that both Donatas Motiejunas and Jonas Valanciunas, who is rated even higher, are likely to pass Zydrunas Ilgauskas as the highest drafted Lithuanians. The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Big Z as the 20th pick in the 1996 draft.

Arvydas Sabonis was drafted 24th in the 1986 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers and the same team chose Linas Kleiza as the 27th pick in 2005.

Jonas Valanciunas has had a great year with Lietuvos Rytas, despite the fact that their team did not make it through to the Playoffs. Nonetheless, his talent will bring him far into the NBA, depending on how well the draft goes. However, his Lithuanian team will miss him and L. Rytas has a lot of work to do for next season.
