Sergey Monya made his second buzzer-beater of the EuroBasket to give Russia
a 63-61 (19-20, 18-14, 14-15, 12-12) victory over F.Y.R. of
Macedonia, which allowed the Russians to avoid the hosts Lithuania in the
quarter-finals.
This will leave F.Y.R. of Macedonia to face the home team of the tournament Lithuania, who will be cheered on by 15,000 vocal supporters in the quarter-final in Kaunas. Having won the game against F.Y.R. of Macedonia, Russia will play against Serbia, the fourth-seeded team from Group E.
Monya also hit another game-winner on the buzzer in the the first group stage against Slovenia.
Aleksey Shved had another good game for Russia and finished with 14 points, Vitaliy Fridzon scored 11, while Timofey Mozgov, Sergey Bykov and the hero of the game Sergey Monya all collected 8 points each.
Bo McCalebb finished as the leading scorer of the game with 16 points, while Pero Antic didn’t do much in the second half, but still finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lietuvos Rytas’ summer signing Predrag Sanardziski chipped in with nine points.
