Arvydas Sabonis was unanimously elected to replace Vladas Garastas, who finished serving his second term as the President of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF), at the helm of Lithuanian basketball.
The 46-year-old living legend, who recovered successfully after being hit by a heart attack recently, was the only candidate in the running.

“It’s interesting where life brings us. I couldn’t have imagined that I’d be congratulating a man, who I started coaching back in 1982 when he came to Zalgiris, with being elected the new President of the Federation,” said Garastas, who handed over the reins to his former pupil.
Sabonis focused on promoting youth and women basketball in his pre-election speech, as well as the development of a legal-base for sponsoring, which would improve the economic state of basketball in the country.
According to the regulations of the Federation, the newly elected LKF President Sabonis will have to step down from another as the President of Zalgiris Kaunas.
