A game in
the Regional League (RKL), which is the third division of Lithuanian
basketball, had a surprising star, as a supposedly drunk referee stole the
spotlight.
Tomas
Banys, who was one of the two officials in the game between Savanoris and the
Vilnius Basketball School in Alytus, put on a show for the spectators before
being escorted from the arena.
“It was the
reaction from the spectators that drew everyone’s attention that something
weird was going on,” Mindaugas Jaruskevicius, the coach of Savanoris, told lrytas.lt after the game.
The coach described
the coach as ‘hardly standing on his feet’ and told that while the teams were
warming up, he approached the secretariat and kissed one woman’s hands before
starting to dance to the music.
With the spectators laughing and heckling, the official still started the game, but was booed off after only a minute into the match, as the other referee Mindaugas Pieskys asked his colleague to leave the court and finished officiating the game alone.
