Zalgiris Kaunas topped Zagreb 87-76 (28-18, 18-11, 20-21, 21-26) in front of their 15,000 crowd, allowing the club from Kaunas to secure a Top16 spot.

Twwo consecutive turnovers from Zalgiris allowed the visitors to gain an edge of four points from the very beginning, but Zalgiris' successful defensive effort quickly paid off and left Zagreb trailing by 10 after the first period.

A 15-3 run kept the hosts advancing in the second giving them a 17-point lead before the break.

Zalgiris maintained the control of the situation throughout the second half and in spite of a late Zagreb spurt in the decisive part of the match, the Greens got their fourth Euroleague victory and a spot in the next competition phase.

Zalgiris were led by the former Toronto Raptors swingman Sonny Weems, who scored 20 points, Marko Popovic added 17, Paulius Jankunas had 12, Mantas Kalnietis finished the game with 9.

Mario Kasun led Zagreb in scoring with 20 points and added eight rebounds, Petar Babic collected 17 points, while Sean May finished the game with 15 points and six boards.

Vladimir Androic (KK Zagreb head coach): “Congratulations and best wishes for Zalgiris, they deserved the next round with this crowd. We started the game very well, but unfortunately our best player got injured and Zalgiris pulled away, winning the game afterwards. You need to have some luck in order to win this kind of game, and we didn't have it today. We played much better in the second half and had a bigger concentration, but with four minutes to go we started to make turnovers and Zalgiris won."

Aleksandr Trifunovic (Zalgiris Kaunas head coach): “Congratulations for everybody, the players, the staff and the management with what seemed very difficult in the beginning of the season. I was listening stories about the pressure all the time, but we work in pressure every day. We were working hard and won this decisive game. Knowing how much points we had on our back produced us trouble later and made them come back with only 7 points left. In the start, when I watched the draw ceremony, I was sure that Zalgiris will make it to the Top16, but I didn't know the things which were inside the team. I hope tonight we gave a nice Christmas gift for everybody who supports Zalgiris.”
