Sonny Weems finds himself in an
awkward situation – having openly talked about leaving Zalgiris in a blog at HoopsHype,
in which the 25-year-old American stated that he has no interest in staying in
Kaunas if the club is eliminated from Euroleague, he could after all be
stuck in Lithuania.
The club’s owner Vladimir
Romanov slammed his fist on the table, telling Russian media that he has no intentions of
letting the player go before the contract runs out at the end of the
season: “I don’t know what Weems is scribbling, but he’ll have to honor the
contract and will not leave the team.”
Weems has been the leader for
Zalgiris this season, averaging a team-high 16 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2
assists for the Kaunas club in Euroleague. However, the team itself has not
been as successful, buried in the bottom of Group H in the Top 16 with a 0-3
record.
