Joan Plaza might be bound to replace Aleksandar Trifunovic at the helm of Zalgiris. With negotiations with Trifunovic not going smoothly, the club’s owner Vladimir Romanov is considering Plaza as a replacement for the Serbian specialist, who led Zalgiris to the Lithuanian League (LKL) title this year.
According to BasketNews.lt, the 49-year-old Plaza was in Kaunas a couple of days ago to talk with Romanov about the possibility of signing with Zalgiris. In the meantime, Trifunovic, who was also in Lithuania to negotiate a new contract with the Lithuanian champions, still hasn’t managed to convince Romanov to offer him a new deal.
Plaza should be familiar to
Lithuanian fans, as the he had defeated Lietuvos Rytas in the ULEB Cup Final in
2007 with Real Madrid. However, after an unsuccessful 2008/09 campaign, the
club sacked Plaza, who then went on to coach Cajasol.
