Zalgiris Kaunas made its first summer move by
announcing having extended the contract of Vytenis Lipkevicius and picked up a
team option on Marko Popovic’s deal for another year.
“Lipkevicius had a good year last season. Time
will show whether his level is good enough. His debut in Zalgiris was
promising, but his offense is rather limited. Popovic, on the other hand, is an
already proven player. Fans love him,” the team’s sporting director Vitoldas
Masalskis told BasketNews.lt.
Masalskis also confirmed that the club is
currently negotiating with a couple of candidates to take the reins at the club
next season. It is reported that Aleksandar Trifunovic will probably not stay
as the coach.
Popovic was averaging 12.5 points, 2.1 rebounds
and 2.1 assists in Euroleague this season, while collecting 11.2 points and 4.0
assists per game in the Lithuanian League (LKL).
Lipkevicius joined Zalgiris in the middle of
last season after starting the year with Baltai Kaunas. The young player was
averaging 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists in LKL and 7.6 points and
4.4 rebounds in the Baltic League.
