Lithuania finished only eighth in the Olympic
Games, but didn’t lose any ground in the FIBA Ranking, maintaining the fifth
position in the world.
The calculations are done on achievements through a timespan of two Olympic cycles. The oldest tournament outside the 8-year period is discarded and replaced with the results of the newest competition.
Although, the performance in London cost the
Baltic country 20 ranking points, the Lithuanians, who have 406 points, still
have a sizeable lead against Russia and Turkey, who are sixth and seven
respectively.
Despite losing points in a mediocre showing in
the Olympics, Lithuania actually got closer to the fourth-placed Greece, who
failed to qualify to the tournament and lost 70 ranking points and have only 12
more than the Lithuanians (418).
The two teams that met in the Olympic final –
USA and Spain – have a big lead against the rest of the nations, as USA is
first with 952 points, while Spain is second with 870.
Argentina has 498 ranking points and is third.
The bronze-medal winners Russia made the
biggest leap, moving up five spots into the sixth position. Italy lost the most
ground, slumping down from the seventh spot to the 21st.
